A town in Wales has the longest one-word place name in Europe. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, which translates to 'St. Mary's Church in the hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio near the red cave,' has 58 characters. The town's full name is still shorter than the ceremonial 168-character name for Bangkok, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured an image of the town on April 9, 2025. The image shows a wider view of the same area, with the Strait of Menai connecting to the open ocean to the north and south of Anglesey island.

Locals usually use a short version of the name, either Llanfairpwll or Llanfair PG. The town is home to about 3,000 people and is known for its treacherous waters due to the complex bathymetry and tides entering the strait from both ends at different times, creating strong swirling currents.
