Mysterious Sprites: Nature's Electric Phenomena

A flash of lightning reveals a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as a sprite, which occurs high above thunderstorms. These crimson figures blink in and out of existence at altitudes of approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers), shortly after a lightning strike.

Sprites are a type of Transient Luminous Event (TLE), characterized by their sudden reddish flashes that can take various shapes, including diffuse plumes and bright, spiny tendrils. They often appear to dance over storm clouds, creating a mesmerizing display. Despite their captivating nature, many questions remain about the formation and behavior of sprites.
