Zooniverse reaches 1 billion classifications
Zooniverse, a NASA grantee, has reached 1 billion classifications contributed by volunteers worldwide. This milestone celebrates the collective efforts of individuals who have marked light curves, confirmed moving objects, and identified species in camera trap images.
Through 31 NASA-sponsored citizen science projects, 324 thousand volunteers have contributed 120 million classifications since 2020. Projects like Planet Hunters TESS and Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 have led to 96 scientific publications, with 56 featuring NASA citizen scientists as co-authors.
According to Laura Trouille, principal investigator of Zooniverse, 'One billion classifications represent far more than a number; it's one billion moments of curiosity transformed into meaningful contributions to research.' Zooniverse enables anyone to contribute directly to real scientific research, providing science-enabling infrastructure to NASA researchers.
